|1st European Forum on freedom of religion and freedom of expression
MECHANISMS TO MITIGATE EXTREMISM AND HATE SPEECH
Madrid, 8th May 2015. On the 10th of June, the 1st European Forum will be held on freedom of religion and freedom of expression, which aims to advance knowledge and understanding of freedom of religion or belief, and thus promote mechanisms to mitigate extremism and religious harassment.
The UN Council of Human Rights has invited us to consider new obstacles in the enjoyment of the right to freedom of religion or belief, as well as the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, who specifically expressed the scourge of violence in the name of religion and the need for concerted action between different actors to try to eradicate this phenomenon.
This concern is growing because of several events like the French weekly Charlie Hebdo and acts of religious extremism in countries like Germany and Denmark, therefore it is necessary to open spaces for reflection and the construction of effective solutions.
Since 2013, the Asociación Miraísmo Internacional, who promotes this Forum, has developed an agenda in different scenarios to strengthen mechanisms that mitigate these expressions of violence and hate speech. The 1st European Forum on freedom of religion and freedom of expression is a scenario that invites social actors called to converge and harmonize freedom of expression and freedom of religion as fundamental and indispensable rights for building a society based on coexistence with respect for each other's identity.
The event will be held at the headquarters of the European Commission in Madrid and will be atended by guest representatives of various religious communities, press associations, the media, academics, human rights advocacy organizations, and experts from various national and international agencies.
